Hearing Voices: Working by Phone
In the mid to late 1970’s, after I’d started to receive national attention for my intuitive work, I was asked to be part of a local weekly radio show. Along with music and news, I'd be there to offer readings for anyone who called in.
Listening intently to the callers, I could hear the shakiness in some voices, the shyness in others and the defiant challenges just daring me to tell them something I couldn’t possibly know about them. That latter set of voices were usually men. I enjoyed their challenges. It was often a fine motivation like a good cup of coffee and reenergized me. Those particular callers got far more details in their phone readings than they might have bargained for. I just couldn’t help myself. “Why do I see TWO women around you?” I would ask. This was usually followed by an awkward silence or a swift hanging up of the phone. It says something about me that I found that enjoyable. I was young. What can I say?
Some weeks I’d be in the chilly radio station studio in Tallahassee, Florida, where I was going to school at the time. Some weeks I’d be on the road teaching workshops. After one show, the program director came in to the studio and said: “Congratulations! So many people called in that we crashed the ‘222’ phone exchange. The ENTIRE exchange! A rep for the local phone company called and is really angry and wants advance notice when you’re going to be on again.” He started to leave and then said: “You have NO idea how happy this makes me.” With a smile on his face, he turned and left.
How can I have a detailed and specific reading with someone that I can’t even see? The answer is obvious (at least to me): NOT seeing what you look like frees me up to trust my empathy and insight completely. Listening intently to the voice on the phone and the simple act of hearing someone saying their name and birthdate for me opens an entire “sonic book” for me. With you saying just a few words, I hear your personality, some of the important details of your life journey and notice your unique energy. In Korea, that energy is sometimes called your “Colors.” I like that. Your unique colors allow me to witness your greatest joy and your deepest sorrow, your history of love and deepest pain. How you’ve found your way to this very moment. To this day, when I begin a session in person, I still close my eyes and ask the person in front of me to say their name and their birthdate out loud for me three times. I hear what makes you glad you’re alive. I hear courage you’ve yet to discover. I can also hear echos of the people who believed in you and those who never did.
Your voice reveals what I call your Undisturbed Wisdom, that experience in you which knows your path and promise. In between your words, the sound of your voice fills the space between us and points me towards your needs at the time we work together. This is how I can offer all my sessions by phone with complete confidence in both accuracy and detail. I promise I will be as on target as I would be if you were sitting in the room with me.
Don’t hesitate to take advantage of a phone session. You’ll be very happy with the outcome. This also holds true for Zoom meetings.
An Extra Bonus of phone sessions: You don’t have to change out of your favorite sweatpants!
